Voice Definitions, Problems & Solutions

Rate:        Almost everyone who is nervous speaks too fast. 
    (Don’t say the next sentence until you’ve come to a complete stop.)

Volume:    Speaking too softly or too loudly. (Yawn and breathe deeply before
    speaking.)  Imagine your voice originates in the diaphragm, gains
    volume and tone as it goes through the chest and out through the
    mouth.  Imagine you’re trying to speak over the noise of jackhammers. 
    If you speak too loudly, imagine yourself in a library.

Clarity:    Understandable as to one’s meaning. Poor enunciation, usually
    the result of lazy daily speech habits. (Try Over-enunciating)

Tone:       Can Reflect Attitude and/or Opinion.  (Recognize what you’re feeling.)


Pitch:       Frequency of vibration of sound waves which reach the ear.
    (Try to use a variety of highs and lows.)

Timbre:    Peculiar or Distinctive Character of Tone.  (Record Yourself!  See
    if you like what you hear; modify what you don’t.)


Modulation:     To Vary in Inflection. (Emphasize certain points)


Expression:    To press out! (Indicate Feeling, Show Enthusiasm.)

Stance:    Stand with good posture.

Eye Contact:    Look someone in the eye.

Poise:       Balance, Equilibrium.  Avoid grimacing, giggling, using uhs and ums,
   rolling your eyes upward, or darting.  Breathe into your Relaxation!
